We all know the Super Bowl was just last weekend, one of the biggest sporting events in the country. Since the first Super Bowl in 1967 it has become more than just the pro football championship game; it is a great stage for all types of media. Only falling behind the soccer World Cup, the Super Bowl ranks as one of the most watched sporting events in the world. Well known companies pay big bucks to get an ad featured during commercial breaks of the big game. The ads range from funny, to sentimental, and encouraging. However, the Super Bowl wasn't always known for the commercials.
In 1984, Apple created a commercial advertising their new personal Macintosh computer. It featured a play on the dystopian themed book, "1984", where a big brother figure is shown on a screen giving orders and control over society until a younger woman comes in and slams the screen with a hammer. At the end of the commercial the ad reads, "On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you'll see why 1984 won't be like "1984." The ad was so affective because it is proving to a country with real fear for the government that they won't have to worry about their privacy and freedom with this new personal computer. It is with this commercial that experts believe the bar for Super Bowl commercials was raised forever.
This year, the ads took a more sentimental approach. Google played an ad called "Loretta", where an elderly man told Google to remember things about his late wife Loretta. This ad touched a lot of people, shortly after it aired people moved to twitter to talk about it.
Another big area of entertainment besides the actual football game is the halftime show. This year for Super Bowl LIV the game was held in Miami, so the performers were Colombian singer, Shakira and actress Latina singer Jennifer Lopez. They performed a number of Latin style songs very fitting for the Miami location. The halftime show team is being criticized for many angles the cameras took of the performers that were deemed inappropriate and the sexualization of the female performers. These things make their way into the news, because of their controversial nature. The Super Bowl is a big day for reporters because of the rivalry in the game, the ads meant to draw your attention, and the halftime show which almost always brings surprises. Overall, it was a very unique halftime performance and it was very fitting for the Miami setting.
The Super Bowl will continue to be a long standing American tradition because of the large scale football game that we seem to live for, and all of the news opportunities and media that it brings. some Americans are even calling the Monday after the Super Bowl, "Super Bowl Monday" because so many Americans don't go into work the next day.
