Upon completing my start-up case study project on Twitter, I was able to distinguish the differences between the social media platforms we know today and why they are all successful in their own ways. Launched in 2006, Twitter is an American microblogging and social networking service where users can post and interact with messages known as "tweets". Registered users can post, like, and retweet tweets, but unregistered users can only read them. Twitter is known for the speed in which information can be shared on their platform, making it a go to for quick news. Twitter's main audience is from ages 18 to 29, it is this younger audience that thrives with the personalized feed and fast content distribution.
Instagram on the other hand didn't come until later in 2010. Instagram is focused around image and video sharing as opposed to twitter which is more blog or message focused. Instagram has become a great platform for businesses to use to advertise, market, and engage to consumers. they have features where you can post up to 10 photos at a time, share 24 hour stories allowing for more timely information, and live videos for followers to stay up to date with what you're doing in that moment. Instagram has a larger target audience range, 18 to 49, due to its appeal to a younger generation, as well as its easy to use features for businesses.
As discussed in my last post, Twitter, along with Instagram, are both owned by the American social media and technology company known as Facebook. Since its launch in 2004, Facebook has been a global success. "Facebook is popular among those in rural, suburban, and urban areas, and those at every income level and educational background." It is often easier to identify who isn't included in Facebooks target audience. "1.56 billion users around the world were active every day on the platform as of March 2019."
Facebook has also taken ownership of Twitter and Instagram. While both are competing with Facebook for popularity, they have been able to distinguish between their target audiences. Each of the above social media platforms have built off of each other Facebook is known for reaching an older crowd, for today's generation of teens this would be their parents and maybe even some grandparents. About 84% of their users are between the ages of 35 and 49.
